Aditya Birla Renewables will acquire Shell-owned Sprng Energy for an enterprise value of $1.8 billion, adding about 5 GW of renewable capacity and taking its portfolio to 9.3 GW.
Sprng Energy brings a renewable portfolio of around 5 GW, including operational, under-construction and contracted projects of renewable energy assets across India, including operational, under-construction, and contracted solar and wind projects.
Following the acquisition, Aditya Birla Renewables will expand its total renewable energy portfolio to approximately 9.3 GW, positioning the group among India’s leading renewable energy developers. The transaction reflects the Aditya Birla Group’s long-term strategy to accelerate investments in clean energy while supporting India’s transition toward a low-carbon economy.
The Aditya Birla Group has announced the acquisition of Sprng Energy, the Indian renewable energy platform owned by Shell, in a landmark $1.8 billion (approximately ₹17,200 crore) transaction. The acquisition marks one of the largest mergers and acquisitions in India’s renewable energy sector and significantly strengthens the conglomerate’s position in utility-scale clean energy.
The company has also outlined ambitious expansion plans to build a renewable energy portfolio exceeding 20 GW over the coming years through a combination of greenfield developments and strategic acquisitions.
For Shell, the divestment aligns with its global strategy of optimizing its renewable energy portfolio and focusing capital on businesses that deliver higher long-term returns. Shell had acquired Sprng Energy from Actis in 2022 and successfully expanded the platform before deciding to exit the investment.
Industry experts believe the acquisition underscores the growing confidence of large Indian conglomerates in renewable infrastructure, driven by increasing electricity demand, supportive government policies, and India’s target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.
As competition intensifies among India’s leading renewable energy companies, strategic acquisitions are becoming a key driver of scale, operational efficiency, and market leadership. The Aditya Birla–Sprng Energy transaction is expected to play a significant role in reshaping India’s renewable energy landscape while reinforcing investor confidence in the country’s clean energy growth story.
