Sumitomo to Acquire 49% Stake in Hero Future Energies’ 500 MWp Wind-Solar Project with 200 MWh BESS in Karnataka

  • Project Company – Clean Solar Power (Baniyana) Pvt. Ltd.
  • Location – Bidar District, Karnataka
  • Solar + Wind Capacity – ~500 MWp
  • Battery Storage – 200 MWh
  • Offtaker – SJVN Limited
  • PPA Tenure – 25 years
  • Planned COD – March 2027
  • HFE Stake – 51%
  • Sumitomo Stake – 49%
  • HFE Global Portfolio: -7.7 GWp
  • HFE BESS Portfolio – 2.9 GWh

Hero Future Energies (HFE), the renewable energy arm of India’s Hero Group, has partnered with Japan-based Sumitomo Corporation to develop a large-scale renewable energy project combining solar, wind and battery energy storage in Karnataka.

Under the partnership, Sumitomo Corporation will acquire a 49% stake in Clean Solar Power (Baniyana) Pvt. Ltd., the company developing the project. HFE’s group company, Hero Solar Energy Pvt. Ltd., will retain the remaining 51% stake.

The project is located in Bidar district, Karnataka, and will combine approximately 500 MWp of solar and wind generation capacity with a 200 MWh co-located Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).

500 MWp Wind-Solar Capacity with 200 MWh BESS

The project will integrate solar and wind generation, which have different generation profiles, with battery storage to help manage fluctuations caused by weather conditions and the time of day.

The combination is designed to improve the consistency of renewable electricity supply and support power delivery during periods of higher demand.

Project Aims to Provide 24/7 Renewable Power

According to Sumitomo Corporation, the project is being developed with the objective of providing electricity 24 hours a day using only renewable energy.

The 200 MWh BESS will play an important role in managing renewable generation and shifting electricity availability to periods when demand is higher, particularly during morning and evening peak hours.

Advanced energy management will therefore be central to the project’s ability to meet the requirements of its long-term power supply arrangement.

25-Year PPA with SJVN

Electricity generated by the project will primarily be sold to SJVN Limited, an Indian government-owned power company, under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

The project will also be able to sell surplus electricity through the power exchange market.

The long-term PPA provides a contracted offtake framework, while the ability to sell surplus electricity on the power exchange provides an additional route for monetising excess generation.

Commercial Operation Planned for March 2027

The project is currently under development, with its scheduled commercial operation date planned for March 2027.

The project is being undertaken by Clean Solar Power (Baniyana) Pvt. Ltd., with Hero Solar Energy holding a 51% stake and Sumitomo Corporation holding the remaining 49%.

The partnership strengthens the collaboration between an Indian renewable energy developer and a major Japanese strategic investor at a time when India’s clean-energy sector is increasingly moving toward hybrid generation and energy-storage solutions.

HFE Expands Hybrid and Energy Storage Portfolio

Hero Future Energies has a global renewable energy portfolio of 7.7 GWp across India, Ukraine, Vietnam and the UK, including operating and under-development projects.

The company also has 2.9 GWh of battery energy storage capacity across its portfolio.

Beyond conventional solar and wind projects, HFE is developing hybrid power, peak power, firm and dispatchable renewable energy (FDRE), energy storage and green hydrogen solutions.

The company also works with commercial and industrial customers in sectors including chemicals, refining, manufacturing, steel, cement and transportation to support their decarbonisation and net-zero transition.

For Sumitomo Corporation, the investment further expands its participation in India’s energy transition. The Karnataka project also highlights the growing importance of combining solar, wind and BESS to deliver more flexible and reliable renewable electricity.

With approximately 500 MWp of renewable generation, 200 MWh of battery storage and a 25-year PPA with SJVN, the project represents a significant step toward integrating renewable generation with round-the-clock power supply capabilities in India.
