AGEL’s Operational Capacity Rises
AGEL’s operational BESS capacity has increased from 3.55 GWh in June 2026 to 6.63 GWh, representing an addition of approximately 3.08 GWh.
AGEL says its 6.63 GWh Khavda BESS is the world’s largest operational single-location BESS. The storage facility is integrated with the company’s renewable energy development at Khavda, where AGEL is developing a 30 GW renewable energy plant across 538 square kilometres.
The BESS uses lithium-ion battery technology, supported by an Energy Management System (EMS) and automated telemetry to manage charging and discharging. Total operational renewable capacity Reach 20,762.70 MW & Total operational BESS capacity Reach 6,632 MWh.
According to AGEL, the 6.63 GWh system can store enough clean energy to power approximately two million homes for a day. The company also compares its capacity with more than 150,000 mid-sized EV batteries and says it can store enough energy daily to meet almost twice the estimated daily electricity requirement of Delhi Metro.
More Than Half of India’s Operational BESS Capacity
With 6.63 GWh of operational storage, AGEL says it now accounts for more than 50% of India’s operational BESS capacity, estimated at approximately 12.6 GWh based on the reference data cited by the company.
The expansion highlights the growing role of battery storage in integrating variable renewable generation, managing peak demand, improving grid flexibility and reducing renewable-energy curtailment.
AGEL Targets 50 GWh Storage
AGEL is targeting further expansion of its energy storage portfolio. The company is on track to add more than 10 GWh of BESS capacity during FY2026-27 and is targeting 50 GWh of storage capacity over the next five years.
The company is also pursuing pumped-storage projects (PSPs) as part of its strategy to develop firm and dispatchable renewable power.
The latest commissioning therefore marks another major step in AGEL’s strategy of combining solar, wind and large-scale energy storage, particularly at its Khavda renewable energy hub in Gujarat.
