Indian’s fast-growing infrastructure company founded in 2012 by Dr. Bondada Raghavendra Rao and headquartered in Hyderabad, Telangana, Bondada Engineering Limited has received a Letter of Intent (LOI) from Gujarat Industries Power Company Limited (GIPCL) to develop a 20 MW / 120 MWh Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Energy Storage System (VRFB BESS) in Vadodara, Gujarat. The EPC package includes 10 years of Operations and Maintenance (O&M), with project completion scheduled within 18 months from receipt of the Notice of Award (NOA).
The project will be developed at GIPCL’s existing 165 MW natural gas power plant complex in Vadodara. The award marks an important milestone in Bondada Engineering’s expansion into advanced energy storage technologies and strengthens its presence in India’s growing battery energy storage system (BESS) market.
Six-Hour Energy Storage Project
The proposed 120 MWh battery storage system has a nominal discharge duration of six hours at its rated power output of 20 MW. This configuration positions the project within the long-duration energy storage (LDES) segment, which can support electricity supply during periods of high demand or lower renewable energy generation.
Vanadium Redox Flow Battery technology stores energy in liquid electrolytes and uses electrochemical reactions to charge and discharge electricity. Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries, flow battery systems can scale power and energy capacity independently, offering flexibility for stationary, grid-scale storage applications.
The technology can support renewable energy integration, peak-demand management and grid flexibility. Its suitability for individual projects depends on factors including capital costs, efficiency, operating conditions and system design.
Bondada Engineering Expands Its Energy Storage Portfolio
Bondada Engineering stated that the GIPCL award demonstrates its engineering capabilities and project execution expertise while marking its entry into advanced long-duration energy storage infrastructure.
The company has described the project as India’s largest grid-scale VRFB BESS project. This ranking reflects the company’s announcement and has not been independently verified against all Indian projects.
India’s Growing BESS Market
According to figures cited by Bondada Engineering, India is targeting approximately 236 GWh of battery energy storage deployment by 2030, compared with around 9.3 GWh of installed capacity at the time referenced in its announcement.
Growing renewable energy capacity and increasing requirements for grid stability are creating opportunities for different storage technologies. The GIPCL project adds to this development by bringing vanadium flow battery technology into a large-scale power infrastructure setting.
With a 10-year O&M commitment and an 18-month completion timeline from receipt of the NOA, the project represents a significant step in Bondada Engineering’s expansion into India’s evolving energy storage sector.
